1335440 Diaphragm pumps for gases A PIERBURG AUTOGERATEBAU KG 3 Nov 1971 [22 Jan 1971] 51134/71 Heading F1N To inhibit deflection of the oscillating diaphragm 13 of a pressure or vacuum pump, a pressure is established in the chamber 31 on the side of the diaphragm remote from the working chamber 41, which pressure is between atmospheric pressure and, in the case of a pressure pump, the maximum working chamber pressure or, in the case of a vacuum pump, the greatest difference between the working chamber pressure and atmospheric pressure. The pressure is established in the chamber 31 through a bore 40 in communication with the working chamber 41 and containing a sintered metal insert 42. Alternatively, the chamber 31 may be pressurized through passages (54, 56) containing calibrated restrictions and connected, respectively, to the pump's suction and delivery pipes (51, 53). A crankshaft 24 rotatably mounted in a removable bush 30 causes reciprocation of a piston 17 and the diaphragm secured thereto. A twin-diaphragm vacuum pump is also described, Fig. 2 (not shown). In this pump each diaphragm is composed of two sheets separated by a space which is in communication with the atmosphere through a permeable ring of rubberized fabric.
