1335398 Manufacturing cathodes EGYESULT IZZOLAMPA ES VILLAMOSSAGI RT 29 Dec 1970 [29 Dec 1969] 61625/70 Heading H1D A method of manufacturing activated cathodes, comprises sintering a tungsten cathode body to 85%-96% of its theoretical density, impregnating its pores with at least one solution of at least one oxygen-containing compound, of at least one element selected from lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, caesium, calcium, strontium, barium, gallium, indium, thallium, cerium, terbium, praseodymium, dysprosium, neodymium, holmium, erbium, samarium, thulium, europium, ytterbium, gadolinium and lutetium, the mass of the impregnating element amounting to 0À01 to 5À0% of the mass of the cathode body, and thereafter plastically deforming the body so that its cross-sectional area is reduced at least 100 times. The cathode body is produced by powder metallurgy which includes pressing and annealing at 1000‹ C., and is then sintered in a stream of hydrogen. After impregnation the body is preferably further impregnated with a solution of a zirconium compound, followed by immersion in an alcoholic polyamide solution. The reduction in cross-sectional area may be achieved by hammering and drawing, in the course of which the body is annealed.
