Abstract

1335192 Antistatic compositions STX 7 Oct 1970 [7 Oct 1969] 47747/70 Heading C3R [Also in Division D1] A composition for rendering fibrous materials and textiles antistatic comprises an aminoplast precondensate derived from melamine, formaldehyde and a polyethylene glycol of molecular weight from 500 to 6000 and a polyisocyanate dissolved in an anhydrous organic solvent. In practice the precondensate generally comprises 1 molar proportion of melamine, 4 to 6 molar proportions of formaldehyde and 2 to 3 molar proportions of the polyethylene glycol. The organic, aliphatic or aromatic, polyisocyanates used in the composition for cross-linking are generally either of the difunctional type such as tetramethylene diisocyanate, hexamethylene diisocyanate, toluene diisocyanate or 4,41-diphenyl diisocyanate methane or of the trifunctional type such as those which are, for example, obtained from 3 mols. of hexamethylene diisocyanate and one mol. of water or from 3 mols. of toluenediisocyanate condensed with 1 mol. of trimethylol propane. Conventional cross-linking catalysts may be used, such as zinc 2-ethyl hexanoate, tin 2-ethyl hexanoate and cobalt naphthenate. Examples of the organic solvent are aliphatic or aromatic monohalogenated or polyhalogenated compounds such as trichloroethylene, perchloroethylene, monochlorobenzene or a fluorinated solvent. The invention also provides a method of rendering fibrous materials and textiles antistatic by applying the above composition and cross-linking the precondensate. The textile materials are generally based on polyamides, polyesters and polyacrylics and on their mixtures.
