Abstract

133,458. Lewis, E. H. Oct. 12, 1918. Range-finders. - Range-finders, also adapted for finding heights, comprise a graduated bar A having a sight-carrying cross-piece B sliding upon it and reading against graduations on the bar A giving the ratio of the range to the distance advanced in making the t w o observations necessary with this instrument. One of two sights C, D sliding on the crosspiece B is placed centrally at F and alined from the end O of the bar A upon the range-object, while the other is alined upon an auxiliary object, the cross-piece B 'being pushed up against a stop H; after the observer has advanced a known distance towards the range-object, similar alinements of the sight are obtained by sliding the cross-bar towards O. In finding heights, the two sights, one of which is centrally placed, are set upon the ends of the object and a similar setting obtained, after the observer has advanced a known distance towards the object, by sliding in the cross-piece. The ratio of the height required to the range which is caleulated as before, is given by the position of the lateral sight upon the graduations of the crosspiece.
