Abstract

133,415. Helmes, M. J. Oct. 4, 1918. Recovering wsate lubricants.-Used lubricating-oils are clarified by heating and, agitating a mixture with water in a number of reclaiming- vessels A, any or all of which can be put into action at one time. The preferred apparatus comprises: (1) a compressed-air plant D consisting of a motor D<3>, a pump D<2>, and a reiservoir D' with a delivery pipe D<4> having branches connected through valves F to the impure-oil containers A<1> within the jaekating-veasels A; (2) a hot-water circulating system C consisting of gasheated boilers C' and a tank C<2> with delivery and return pipes C<3>, C<4> to and from the jackets A; (3) two or more pairs of reclaiming-vessels each consisting of an impure-oil container A<1> with a pipe connexion B<1> to a clarified-oil reservoir B, and of a jacketing-vessel A having a valved connexion E to its container A' and a drain H and a water overflow pipe L to the drain H. In practice, the oil in one pair of containers A<1> is heater by circulation of water in the jacket A, and water and air are admitted by opening the valves E, F; after treatment has proceeded for a suitable time, the air and water are cut off, the liquid allowed to settle, and the oil layer forced through the pipe B<1> by admission of more water through the valve E. The impurities are run off through the drain H by opening valve J. The compressed-air and hot-water circulating systems are used continuously by treating oil in other pairs of containers when not required for any particular pair. The complete self-contained apparatus described may be built on a motor or trailer so as to be readily portable. The water-circulating system or the compressed-air apparatus described may be dispensed with in places where such apparatus is already available. Injected steam may be used to effect both heating and agitation; or the agitation may be by beaters and the beating by any convenient means, and a suitable coagulant or clarifier may be added to the liquid in the containers A<1>.
