Abstract
1334145 Cleaning vehicle headlamps GENERAL MOTORS Ltd 21 Sept 1972 [23 Sept 1971] 44385/71 Heading A4F Each headlamp 7 of a motor vehicle is provided with a wiper element 20, freely flexible in directions parallel to the surface of the headlamp lens and substantially inflexible in planes normal to the lens surface, and carried by a movable arm 17 actuated by drive mechanism to move each element 20 to and fro over a lens in such manner that at the end of its travel in either direction the element is resiliently deflected to abut and conform to the curvature of a bezel 8. The illustrated wiper arm 17 is common to two adjacent headlamps 7 each end having a holder 19 pivotally mounting a wiper element 20, and its intermediate portion being secured in a bush 16 on a rotary shaft 12 Fig. 2, (not shown). The latter is oscillated to actuate the wiper system by a motor driven rotary crank 3 connected by a cable 26 passing around a pulley 15 on the shaft (12) to a further pulley 15 on a similar shaft for operating wipers for cleaning headlamp glasses at the other side of the vehicle. Each shaft (12) is biased by a helical spring 22 to rotate in direction opposite to that in which it is rotated by a pull of the cable 26 by the rotating crank 3, whereby the oscillating rotation of each shaft (12) is obtained. Each wiper element 20 comprises an elastometic or plastics strip 30 reinforced by a resilient metal strip 31 and carrying brush bristles 32. Alternatively each element 20 may be an elastomeric wiper blade. Washing liquid may be delivered on to the headlamp lenses through jets adjacent thereto or carried by the wiper elements 20 or the arms 17.
