Abstract
1333899 Catalyst for acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile production KNAPSACK AG 1 June 1972 [5 June 1971 10 Nov 1971] 25721/72 Heading C2C [Also in Division B1] Acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile are manufactured from propylene or isobutylene respectively by reacting the olefin with air and/or oxygen and ammonia at 350-520‹ C. and 0À1-10 atmospheres absolute in a flow or fluidized bed in contact with a powdered catalyst consisting of Fe/Bi/Mo/P oxides on a silicic acid carrier, the catalyst being prepared by (i) homogeneously impregnating a preformed pulverulent bismuth-phosphorus molybdate/silicic acid catalyst with an iron salt solution of volume 1-2À5 times the predetermined volume of the pores of the bismuth-phosphorus molybdate/ silicic acid catalyst; (ii) slowly drying the resulting Fe containing catalyst at 120-250‹ C. so that the iron salt decomposes to the oxide; and (iii) sintering at 600-700‹ C. The moist catalyst formed in step (i) may be saturated with gaseous ammonia, methylamine, dimethylamine, trimethylamine or ethylamine prior to drying in step (ii). Examples 8-14 and 18-20 describe the preparation of acrylonitrile from propylene, ammonia and air of volume ratios 1 : 1À25 : 9À5-10 respectively using catalytic oxides of elemental atomic ratios Mo : Bi : P: Fe of 15 : 10 : 1À2 : 1, 2À5, 5, 10, prepared by using Fe (NO 3 ) 2 as the iron salt.
