Abstract

1333796 Electro-phoretic separation of substances LKB-PRODUKTER AB 28 May 1971 [2 June 1970] 18186/71 Heading C7B In a method of separating ions of the same polarity present in a sample by introducing the sample into a column between two electrodes with a leading electrolyte, of which the ions migrate more rapidly than those of the sample, present between the sample and the electrode towards which the ions migrate, and with a trailing electrolyte, of which the ions migrate more slowly than those of the sample, present between the sample and the counter-electrode, the leading electrolyte is introduced under pressure to cause it tb flow towards the sample and a boundary between zones containing ions of different mobilities is detected, a signal from the detector serving to vary the pressure of the leading electrolyte or to vary the voltage applied, to cause the boundary to move at a predetermined speed or to remain stationary. As shown liquid column 1 extends between chambers 2 and 3 in which electrodes 4 and 5 are immersed. The sample to be separated is supplied via injecting means 8 and valve 7, and the leading electrolyte is supplied from reservoir 11 provided with float 13, the raising or lowering of which in response to a signal from detection means 17 serves to control the position of the boundary between the sample and the leading electrolyte. The detection means 17 may comprise a thermo-couple or U.V. absorption measuring means.
