Abstract

1333599 Spot-type disc brakes GIRLING Ltd 27 May 1971 [29 May 1970 22 Oct 1970] 25968/70 and 50096/70 Heading F2E In a floating caliper disc brake the caliper 12 is guided between a pair of circumferentially spaced guiding members 4 forming part of a stationary drag taking member 1, each member 4 comprising an arm 5 an extension 6 of which extends over the peripheral edge of the disc. Oppositely facing innermost faces of the guiding members are formed with at least three axially and radially spaced co-planar surfaces 7, 8, 9 upon which the caliper is slidably guided for movement parallel to the disc axis. Fluid pressure is applied to a piston (28), Fig. 4 (not shown), causing a friction pad assembly 32 to engage the disc, the drag on the assembly being taken directly by the arm 5. The caliper 12 sliding relative to stationary member 1 applies a friction pad assembly 35 to the opposite face of the disc, the drag on assembly 35 being transferred to members 4 through the caliper 12 and the turning moment on caliper 12 acting on surface 7 of extension 6 and reacting on surfaces 8, 9 of arm 5. A limb 13 of caliper 12 is formed with surfaces 19 (not shown) which slidably co-operate with shoulders 11 of arms 5 and caliper bridge portion 14 is formed with surfaces 20 slidably engaging shoulders 10 on extension 6, the surfaces 19, 20 and shoulders 10, 11 being urged into engagement by a pair of circumferentially spaced tension springs 21 detachably anchored in grooves 22 in arms 5. Each spring 21 is also anchored to a flange 23 of a tab washer 24 formed with a tab 25 cranked to engage limb 13. Fingers 26 of tab 25 are received in grooves 27 but do not normally contact the walls thereof. If either spring 21 breaks, fingers 26 prevent caliper 12 separating from member 1. In a further embodiment, Figs. 7-11 (not shown), bolts (45) engaging a recess (47) in caliper (12) prevent separation of the caliper and member 1 if a tension spring (44), anchored to each bolt and to a limb (14b) of the caliper and urging surfaces 19, 20 and 10, 11 into engagement, breaks. In another embodiment, Figs. 12-15 (not shown), two pistons 52, circumferentially spaced are provided for actuation of the brake. The pad assembly 35 may be secured to limb 15 by means of a bolt 81, Fig. 20 (not shown). An automatic adjuster may be provided comprising a threaded sleeve 38 and a threaded strut 37, mechanical application of the disc brake taking place by means of a cam spindle 40 actuating a thrust member 41 engaging sleeve 38.
