Abstract

133,355. Becket. F. M. April. 30, 1918. Calcium carbide. -Aggregates for the production of carbide are made by coking a mixture of carbonaceous material, such as bituminous coal, with unburnt limestone, without stirring during the heating. The mixture from the storage bin 3 is passed by the feeding-device 4 to the shallow trays 2, which pass very slowly through the heating-chamber 1. Heating is effected by a burner 7 at the end, and also, if desired, by lateral burners 8. The products of combustion and the carbon dioxide escape through the outlet 9, while the products of the coking operation are mainly given off beneath the apron 6, pass away through the outlet 10, and may be treated for the extraction of by-products and then supplied to the burners 7, 8.
