Abstract

1333357 Delivering sheets HARRISINTERTYPE CORP 23 Feb 1972 [7 May 1971] 8402/72. Heading B8B Magazines are made up by collating into compartments on a conveyer 24, Fig. 1, signatures fed from a plurality of pockets 22a-22n, each pocket storing a set of identical signatures, the arrangement being such that the magazines are made up of different combinations of signatures, signatures being fed into any one compartment only from selected pockets in response to data concerning the subscriber who is to receive the magazine. For example, ten pockets may be programmed to feed signatures into every magazine, while four are programmed to feed only into selected ones. Data as to geographical location, income or other criteria in respect of each subscriber is recorded on a control tape which is read by a computer 36 which through electrical outputs 70 controls the feed from the pockets by means such as controlling the vacuum to separators. Subscribers who are to receive similar magazines are recorded in succession on the tape so that the feed instructions can remain the same for a plurality of cycles, the computer having a counter set to the number of such subscribers. The collated signatures are fed to a binder, trimmer and labeller. In the event of double feed or absence of feed, a caliper detector roller 94, Fig. 11, actuates one of two contacts 98 to disable the remaining pockets. Incorrectly applied covers by the binder 26 are also detected and cause rejection of the magazine. The labelling device 30 is also controlled by the computer so as to apply the correct label to a passing magazine.
