Abstract

1333211 Laminates; seaming non-metallic sheet material J LUC 29 Sept 1970 [12 July 1969] 35216/69 Headings B5N and B5K The adhesive free surface of a flexible layer of material of thickness not exceeding 200 microns is bonded to the adhesive free surface of another object, which may be another layer of material, by placing the layer and object between an impacting surface and a backing surface and subjecting them to the impact of a blow not exceeding 1000 kg/cm<SP>2</SP> at a temperature below their softening points. The impacting surface or the backing surface may be provided with relief. An intervening material, which may be provided with relief may be inserted between the impacting surface and the materials to be bonded. The impacting surface, backing surface and/or the intervening material may be heated. The backing surface may be constituted by the plate of a condenser, means being provided for applying a voltage between the plates. In order to protect the materials to be bonded from damage during impact the backing surface is preferably provided with cushioning and a barrier material may be laid over the materials to be bonded. The flexible layer is preferably an oriented or irradiated film of polypropylene, polyethylene, polyvinylchloride, polystyrene or copolymers thereof. In an embodiment the backing surface is a cigarette packet on which the material is being scaled. The method may be employed to bond thermoplastic resins, thermosetting resins, metals, paper and woven or non-woven fabrics.
