Abstract

1333161 Tearing apparatus WINDMOLLER & HOLSCHER 11 Jan 1971 [30 Jan 1970] 1237/71 Heading B4B An apparatus for severing by tearing lengths of tube from a continuously fed flattened tubular web St provided with transverse rows of perforations P comprises a pair of holding rolls 4, 4<SP>1</SP> rotatable at a speed equal to or less than that of the feeding speed of the web, a pair of severing rolls 5, 5<SP>1</SP> for advancing the leading end of the web at a higher speed than that of the holding rolls during each severing operation, and a pair of tensioning rolls 8, 8<SP>1</SP> arranged to tension the leading end of the web before each severing operation. The lower rolls 4, 5 of the holding and severing rolls are positively driven at their respective differential speeds and the upper rolls 4<SP>1</SP>, 5<SP>1</SP> are freely rotatable on pivoted levers 6, 6<SP>1</SP>; the levers are raised and lowered out of and into contact with the lower rolls via bars 7, 7<SP>1</SP> when a perforated line P is moving along a path X between the holding and severing rolls. The lower roll 8 of the tensioning rolls is positively rotated while the upper roll is freely rotatable in bearings 9 loaded downwardly by adjustable springs 10. In operation, the material is fed by rollers 1, 2 until the leading end passes between the faster rotating tensioning rollers 8, 8<SP>1</SP> the pull on the web being limited by adjusting the springs. The upper rolls 4<SP>1</SP>, 5<SP>1</SP> are then lowered when a perforation line P is in the path X thereby severing a length S; this length is discharged by means of a conveyer 12. In a modification the tensile force exerted on the web by the rollers 8, 8<SP>1</SP> may be varied by means of a friction clutch 14 instead of the springs. The upper roll 81 may also be arranged to be raised and lowered in synchronism with the rollers 4<SP>1</SP>, 51.
