Abstract
1333060 Controlling vehicles GENERAL MOTORS Ltd 4 Nov 1971 [5 Nov 1970] 52646/70 Heading B7H [Also in Division G1] A device for automatically interrupting the ignition circuit of a motor vehicle if the driver's breath contains excessive alcohol comprises a resistor 19 of wire coated with finely divided platinum located so as to be contacted by the driver's breath and connected in a Wheatstone bridge circuit which becomes unbalanced to actuate an ignition cut-out device 5 if a predetermined alcohol level is exceeded. As shown, the bridge is energized from a stabilizer 16 connected to the vehicle's battery 1. The bridge output is amplified at 17 and connected via a 10 second time delay 29 to the cut-out device 5. A buzzer or flashing light 35 gives warning of pending cut-out. The sensing resistor 19 may be in the headlining of the vehicle, in the steering wheel, or in a tube incorporating a pressure switch down which the driver must blow to complete the ignition circuit.
