Abstract

1333045 Alkyd resins PAINT RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 25 Nov 1970 [25 Nov 1969] 30 July 1970] 57711/69 and 37001/70 Heading C3R [Also in Divisions B2 and G2] Non-drying alkyd resins produced from a polyhydric alcohol, aromatic polybasic acid and mono-unsaturated or saturated fatty acid are cured by exposing them to irradiation, e.g. with electron irradiation or with ultra-violet light which contains radiation of wavelength 250- 320 nm. The resins may be coated on to substrates, e.g. of steel, aluminium, tinplate, wood, glass or plastics material, prior to irradiating. Printing reliefs may be produced by exposing an uncured film of the non-drying alkyd resin on a backing to an ultra-violet image and then removing the non-irradiated and accordingly uncured areas by washing with an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent, e.g. xylol. The non-drying alkyd resin may also contain photosensitizers, e.g. vanadium or uranium salts or soaps, cobalt compounds and eosin, photo-active pigments, e.g. zinc oxide, or an amino-formaldehyde resin together with an acid catalyst, e.g. a butylated urea- or melamine-formaldehyde resin and phosphoric acid or an acid alkyl ester thereof, hydrochloric acid or p-toluene sulphonic acid. In preparing the non-drying alkyd resin there may be used as polyhydric alcohol, glycerol, trimethylol-propane or -ethane or pentaerythritol, as polybasic acid, ortho, iso- or terephthalic acid or trimellitic acid and as fatty acid, pelargonic, lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic, oleic or ricinoleic acid. In examples non-drying alkyd resins prepared from glycerol, o-phthalic anhydride and coconut oil or castor oil which may be coated on to glass, aluminium, polyester or polyethylene films and may contain uranyl nitrate, vanadium naphthenate or a butylated urea- or melamineformaldehyde resin, containing as catalyst phosphoric acid, acid butyl phosphate, hydrochloric acid or p-toluene sulphonic acid, or be in the form of a paint containing zinc oxide or rutile titanium dioxide are cured by exposure to electron irradiation or ultra-violet light.
