Abstract

1332773 Fuel elements UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION 2 March 1972 [15 March 1971] 9720/72 Heading G6C A fuel module for a seed-blanket type, light water breeder reactor comprises a single seed region 34 disposed within an elongated, movable assembly 22 and including a plurality of spaced apart seed rods 36, and a blanket region 42 disposed within a stationary assembly 24 surrounding the movable assembly 22 and including a plurality of spaced apart blanket rods 48 fuelled with fertile material and containing small amounts of fissile material. Several of these fuel modules are assembled together to form the entire core of the reactor and reactivity control is achieved in the reactor by moving the seed region of each module into and out of the reactor core. The fuel rods 36 include upper and lower blanket regions 38, 40 of movable assembly 22, which regions comprise Th<SP>232</SP>O 2 , and the seed region 34 which comprises a U<SP>233</SP>O 2 /Th<SP>232</SP>O 2 mixture, the U<SP>233</SP>O 2 comprising 5 to 15, preferably 7À4 wt. per cent of the mixture. Thorium poison wedge stepping is employed in seed region 34 by tapering as shown, and blanket region 38 is stepped complementary to the stepped portion of seed region 34. Each of the fuel rods 36 comprises a Zr-alloy casing in which a plurality of seed fuel pellets and blanket fuel pellets are stacked to achieve the stepping configuration of Fig. 2 when the fuel rods 36 are assembled. The fuel rods 48 comprise uranium-bearing blanket region 42 and upper and lower blanket regions 44, 46, these rods being of similar construction but of larger diameter than the fuel rods 36. The blanket region 42 is fuelled with a U<SP>233</SP>O 2 /Th<SP>232</SP>O 2 mixture, the U<SP>233</SP>O 2 comprising 0À8 to 3À0, preferably 1À7 wt. per cent of the mixture, while the blanket fuel in upper and lower blanket regions 44, 46 is comprised of Th<SP>232</SP>O 2 . The blanket regions 42, 46 are tapered stepwise and complementarily to one another. The fuel rods 36, 48 are assembled in loosely packed array, being axially spaced from one another by spacer grids.
