Abstract
1332357 Reforming naphtha ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 12 Oct 1970 [31 Oct 1969] 48314/70 Heading C5E High-octane gasoline is made by hydroforming a feed over a catalyst at 875 to 920 F. and 50 to 500 p.s.i.g., extracting the product to yield an aromatic extract and a paraffinic raffinate, and hydroforming the raffinate over a catalyst at 900 to 980 F. and 59 to 500 p.s.i.g., the hydroforming conditions being more severe in the second hydroforming stage than in the first. The raffinate may be fractionated and a fraction boiling below 320 F. passed to the second hydroforming stage, a higher distillate may be taken off for use as jet fuel, and the bottoms fraction hydrocracked. The extract may also be fractionated, the two bottoms fractions combined and hydrocracked, the hydrocrackate fractionated and the bottoms fraction recycled to the hydrocracking. The catalysts in the hydroforming steps may be of eta-alumina with platinum and chlorine, with a higher proportion of chlorine in the second stage, or the catalyst in the first stage may be a sulphided platinum catalyst. The cracking catalyst, when used, may be nickel-tungsten or hydrogen faujasite, palladium on hydrogen faujasite, nickel sulphide on silica-alumina, or noble metal on HF-activated alumina or clay. In Example I, the product from the first hydrocracking stage is topped to 160 F. before extraction. In Example 2, the feed is hydrofined over a cobalt molybdate catalyst on an alumina base before the first hydroforming step.
