Abstract

1332108 Measuring aircraft control surface deflection ULMIC SA 14 April 1972 [16 April 1971, 17331/72 Heading B7W Apparatus for checking an actual control surface deflection against a desired deflection, in the embodiment for a flap 4, comprises a clamp 5 attached to the root trailing edge of the flap and carrying a source 6 of radiation e.g. ultraviolet light and a remotely controlled pivotable shutter 7. The tip 10 of the wing 1 carries a further clamp on which is mounted a photographic device 8 and limit marks 11, 12 visible to the lens of device 8 are marked on the fuselage 2. In operation shutter 7 is moved to render the light source visible to the camera and the flap is operated over its normal range of movement. The film from device 8 is developed and printed as an enlargement, preferably on a stable polyester support and the resultant trace between marks 11 and 12 compared visually with a datum trace. Any deviation resulting from wing distortion or mis-alignment of flap tracks can therefore be detected and corrections made. The source 6 may be a heating element or a deposit of luminous paint and the devices 6 and 8 may be reversed in position.
