Abstract

1331872 Hand tools WILKINSON SWORD Ltd 24 March 1972 [6 May 1971 27 May 1971 17 Aug 1971] 10644/71 17598/71 and 37191/71 Heading A1B [Also in Division B4] A hand tool which may be a spade or a fork comprises a handle 12 secured to a substantially flat surface of a working head 10 by a curved tubular tong portion 13 terminating in a flat oblique oval end surface which is welded around its periphery to the flat surface. The tong is formed by fitting two tubes 14, 15 together telescopically, bending the tubes, flattening the bent tubes to an oval cross-section, obliquely cutting one end to form a welding surface, and having one tube extending beyond the other at the other end to form a support for the shaft 16 of the handle. The spade head comprises a blade of sheet steel, and the fork head, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown) comprises a U-shaped member, defiining two tines (22) and a footrest (21), welded to two further tines (23), and a flat plate (24). The handle tang 13 may comprise a stainless steel outer tube and a mild steel inner tube and either can be extended to form the shaft 16, which has a protective plastics sleeve if of mild steel, or the shaft 16 may be of wood fixed by a spigot and epoxy resin or rivets. The handgrip 17 is a plastics moulding with a spigot or socket fixed by adhesive or rivets to the shaft 16.
