Abstract
1331750 Stud and socket fastenings INTERLOCKED FASTENERS Ltd 19 April 1971 [6 March 1970 30 Oct 1970] 10928/70 and 51842/ 70 Heading E2B A receptacle R is adapted to receive, for the purpose of fastening together two juxtaposed members 2, 10 having respective apertures 6, 11 in register, a rotatable stud 14 comprising a shank 15 having at least one pinlike radial projection 17 thereon, and comprises a substantially cylindrical rigid body 1, a base portion defined by a peripheral flange 5, a central longitudinal bore 24 extending through the body from an aperture 4 in the base of the body, at least one slot 25 formed in the wall of the body and which has an opening that is directed towards the base, the slot defining a helical ramp 29 that terminates in a hollow 30 adjacent to but spaced from the end face of the body that is remote from the base, an area of the body between the said end face and the part of the slot defining the helical ramp having a thickness that is less than to either side of that area, and a cage 3 for holding the base against one of the members. As shown, the housing 12 of the stud is secured to the member 10 by a retaining ring 13 having a crenellated inner periphery, and the stud has a slotted head 16 which retains a spring 19 within the housing; the cross-pin 17 is constituted by a hollow, metal cylinder having a longitudinal slit 20, or the pin may be of wire the ends of which are flattened. An annular sealing ring may be disposed between the shoulder 22 of the housing and the member 10. The die-cast receptacle R is provided with two, opposed, longitudinal slots 25 extending to the square base 5 and each is constituted by an inclined side wall 26 extending to the annular top 27 of the receptable and a wall 28 forming a helical ramp 29 at the end of which is a hollow 30 providing a detent for the pin 17. The wall 28 extends beyond the hollow to form a wall 31 and the area of the body between the end face 27 and the ramp 29, i.e. the wall 34, extending between the inner edge 35 of the wall 26 to the inner edge 36 of the wall 31, has a thickness less than the thickness of the wall portions 32 which lie on either side thereof. The receptacle is secured to the panel 2 by a flanged cage 3 having lugs which are received in cut-outs 44 in the base 5 to prevent rotation of the body relative to the cage. In modifications, (a) a cup shaped spring is disposed between a shoulder on the shank 15 of the stud and the annular top 27, (b) the head of the stud is frusto-conical in form for co-operation with a similarly formed seat in the. housing 12 which is secured to the member 10 by a snap-ring or a semi-circular split ring, and (e) the base 5, Fig. 15, of the receptacle is provided with lugs 67 which are received in apertures 71 of the flanges 70 of a channelshaped member.
