Abstract

1331667 Making tubular films J THORDARSON 8 Oct 1971 [9 Oct 1970] 46957/71 Heading B5B In the extrusion of thermoplastic material as a tubular film by a process which involves expanding the film by a "bubble" of entrapped gas, the gas is cooled and circulated by apparatus inside the bubble. The apparatus additionally removes condensable impurities from the air. The apparatus consists of an elongated hollow housing 1 with a cooling element 2 past which the gas is blown by means such as a fan (not shown). The gas passes from the cooler down through baffle sets 7 and 8 into the space between walls 9 and 10 to the nozzle 10c. The armulus formed by walls 9, 10 rotate about mast 3, distributing the air evenly, the remainder of the apparatus is stationary, being connected by bearings 5, 6 to the rotating nozzle. Liquid condensing on wall 9 is collected in trough 14 by means of downward projecting lip 9a. Liquid condensing on wall 10 is conveyed up lip 10a into trough 11 by a combination of surface tension and centrifugal forces. Optionally, perforations 10b may be provided in lip 10a in order to facilitate transfer of liquid from the inside of wall 10 to lip 10a. Liquid condensing on cooler 2 collects in trough 15. Optionally pipes 12, 16, 17 may be provided by which condensate may be removed.
