Abstract

1331086 Electro-plating CENTER OF SCIENTIFIC & APPLIED RESEARCH Ltd 12 Oct 1970 [13 Oct 1969] 48357/70 Heading C7B A porous metallic coating is formed on a metallic substrate to multiply its effective surface area by electroplating in which plating current is passed successively to small areas of the substrate at densities of at least 80A/cm<SP>2</SP> of the exposed substrate surface. The current may be passed as pulses e.g. at a frequency of 3 C/D and a pulse duration of 40ms for a C.D. of 100A/cm<SP>2</SP>. The plating bath 1 may be divided into two compartments by an insulating partition e.g. diaphragm 2 provided with an opening or slit 5 to expose successively only a small part of the surface of the moving substrate e.g. band 4 on one side of the partition to the plating current from the anode 3 on the other. Preferably the slit extends across the width of the band, being of reduced width at its ends adjacent the band edges. Wire may be plated using pulsed current by passing it through a small diameter glass V-tube inside another V-tube provided with an annular opening.
