Abstract

1330718 Load cells WELWYN ELECTRIC Ltd 14 July 1972 [21 Sept 1971] 43937/71 Heading G1N A load cell comprises a flattened tubular member with a tie bolt passing through and secured to the facing curved ends, whereby a load applied between the facing flat surfaces stresses the tie bolt by an amount which is measured by strain gauge resistors fixed to it and is indicative of the load. As shown for measuring the load on an axle of a road vehicle with the axle below the suspension springs, the load cell is clamped between the springs 2 (Fig.3) and the saddle plate 6 for the axle. The transducer comprises an elliptical steel tube 17 whose upper flat face is bolted between plates 18, 19 to the spring assembly 2 and whose lower flat face is clamped between plate 20 and the saddle plate 6. Plate 19, 20 have matching dovetails which are normally spaced by a gap d. A bolt 22 passing longitudinally through clearance holes in plates 19, 20 is provided centrally with flat portions 35, 36 on which strain gauge resistors 27 are mounted. The bolt is rigidly attached to the tube 17 by nuts 23, 24 and curved washers 25, 26. The transducer assembly is located centrally by means of pins 32, 33 and holes 31, 34. A load on the axle produces a distortion of the tubular members 17 and the resulting change in others in bolt 22 is sensed by the strain gauge resistors 27.
