1330404 Tracking gauges for vehicle wheels; measuring fluid flow V L CHURCHILL & CO LTD 3 July 1972 [ 16 April 1971] 9615/71 Headings G1X, G1R Apparatus for checking the alignment of the wheels of a road vehicle, comprises gauging heads 1,2 for engagement with wheels, or parts attached to the wheels, on opposite sides of the vehicle, each head having a fixed plunger or datum boss (4) Fig. 3, (not shown) and two movable plungers 5, 9 which are spaced respectively horizontally and vertically relative to the datum boss and which are connected to pneumatic gauging equipment, such equipment providing indications in accordance with the positions of the two movable plungers in each head. The movable plungers 5, 9 which preferably are arranged to engage plate 3 mounted on the wheels are each connected to air supply conduits of the pneumatic equipment and are so arranged in their associated heads as to adjust the extent of air escape slots (13) in accordance with their positions relative to the heads whereby the flow of air through the conduits is indicative of the positions of the plungers 5,9. The flow of air through each conduit may be measured by the position of a ball in a vertically arranged tapered portion of the conduit, the position being read-off against a scale 17. The plungers 5 may be connected to a common flowmeter for indicating the amount of toe-in or toe-out of the wheels substantially independently of whether the steering position of those wheels is dead-ahead whereas the plungers 9 are connected to separate flowmeters for indicating the camber of the wheels. The conduits may be provided with pressure regulators 15 supplied from a main pressure regulator 14 and also with an adjustable bleed orifice 18 for zeroizing purposes.
