Abstract

1330398 Seaming non-metallic sheet material WHITEHALL MACHINERY Ltd 29 Aug 1972 [2 Sept 1971] 41062/71 Heading B5K In apparatus for sealing plastics film layers, e.g. a filled bag, by passing them between a pair of parallel heating blocks 9, 10 while held between parallel closely adjacent runs of moving head-conductive bands 1, 2, the blocks 9 10 are mounted so that they are maintained parallel to each other when they are moved apart by the entry between them of the film layers carried by the bands 1, 2. As shown, the bands 1, 2 run around pulleys 3, 4 and pass through heating and cooling units 5, 6 comprising heating and cooling blocks 9, 10 and 11, 12, respectively. Two pairs of spring- loaded rollers 7, 8 urge the bands 1, 2 together. Each block 11, 12 is clamped by an anvil 13 against a bar 14 having a conduit 15 therein for the passage of cooling fluid. The bars 14 are mounted on brackets 16, 17 pivoted to a fixed member 23 about an axis 18. Each bracket 16, 17 comprises two end plates 19 rigidly connected by a beam 20. The bracket 16 is held fast by a bolt 21 and nuts 22 and the bracket 17 is urged about the axis 18 by a compression spring 24 to urge the block 12 towards the block 11. The blocks 9, 10 are mounted in the same manner but the bars 14 are replaced by bars 25 containing electrical heating cartridges. Rotatable dials 26 are provided for setting the temperature of the blocks 9, 10. To relieve tension on the film layers being sealed, two endless chains 33, 34 are mounted immediately below the bands 1, 2. Each link of each chain has an upturned angle-piece 35 and springs 38 urge elements 36 towards an element 37 to urge the angle-pieces 35 together to grip the film layers. (For Figures see next page.)
