Abstract

1330296 Forming bodies comprising glassy carbon COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 5 Jan 1971 [14 Nov 1969] 55930/69 Heading C1A A body comprising carbon of the type known as glassy carbon is formed by heating an alkaline mixture of a phenol and an aidehyde at a temperature between 250‹ C. and the temperature at which the mixture darkens or blackens because of cross-linking, to form a thermoplastic product which is ground to a fine powder, and the powder sintered and then carbonized to give the desired product. The aldehyde used may have up to three C atoms, e.g. formaldehyde, and the phenol may be a phenol possessing one hydroxy group, e.g. phenol. The temp. in the first heating stage is preferably 300-350‹ C. The finely divided powder may be compacted before or during sintering. The thermoplastic intermediate may be sintered at 250-340‹ C. The sintered product may be carbonized e.g. at 1000‹ C. in an inert atmosphere. The electrical resistivity and the stability in air on heating are given for the product.
