Abstract

1329678 Substituted 2 - (5H) - furanones MERCK PATENT GmbH 25 Feb 1972 [3 April 1971] 8859/72 Heading C2C The invention comprises compounds (IV), where R<SP>3</SP> is phenyl substituted by phenyl, halophenyl, F, Cl, NO 2 , CF 3 , CN, R<SP>2</SP> and/or OR<SP>2</SP>; or thienyl or chlorothienyl and R<SP>2</SP> is C 1-4 alkyl, and the preparation of compounds (I), where R<SP>1</SP> is C 1-6 alkyl, phenyl, or is the same as R<SP>3</SP> and X is CN or COOR<SP>2</SP>, by reacting a compound R<SP>1</SP>-CO-CH 2 OCOCH 3 with a compound X-CH 2 -COOR<SP>2</SP> in a polar solvent in the presence of a basic condensation agent. The compounds (I) are useful as intermediates for dyestuffs and pesticides.
