Abstract
1329570 Gas storage container; cartridges DYNAMIT NOBEL AG 4 Dec 1970 [6 Dec 1969] 57833/70 Headings F3A and F4P [Also in Division B7] A liquefied gas storage container, Fig. 2, for inflating a vehicle crash restraint cushion 4<SP>1</SP> (see Division B7) comprises a cylinder 3<SP>1</SP> closed at one end by a burstable membrane 6 communicating with the interior of the cushion via a projecting diffuser 9, the container having therein a casing 7 of, e.g. steel, for receiving a cartridge containing a pyrotechnic charge which is detonated electrically by a bridge fuze 17, Fig. 3, connected to a pair of wires 18 passing through holes 10 in a base 8. The cartridge, Fig. 3, comprises a cylinder 11 of, e.g. polyethylene or polystyrene having an end cap 15 and a tamping plug 12 locating a thin walled cylinder 14 of cardboard, surrounded by a non-explosive pyrotechnic charge 13 comprising an oxygen carrier, e.g. barium nitrite a gas generator, e.g. aminoguanidine azotetrazole and a powdered metal or metal oxide, e.g. zirconium, Mg Al or vanadium pentoxide. (Examples of charge composition are described). On actuation, the cylinder 11 disintegrates, and the case 7 fractures at pre-weakened (points, the heat boiling the liquefied gas (e.g. dichlorodifluoromethane) which fractures the membrane 6 and vaporizes through the diffuser 9.
