Abstract

1329488 Multi-fuel burners GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 29 June 1971 [18 Sept 1970] 30286/71 Heading F4T In a dual fuel burner assembly a burner element 4 comprises a plurality of fuel nozzles 12 spaced along the element each nozzle being adapted for the introduction of gas or liquid fuel at separate inlets; a gas manifold pipe 13 supporting the nozzles 12 and communicating with the gas inlets 20; a liquid manifold pipe 22 within and extending along the gas manifold so as to be shielded thereby; and a plurality of tubular expansion coils 21 supporting the liquid manifold, each with one end connected to the liquid manifold and the other end to the liquid inlet of the respective one of the nozzles the coils allowing for relative thermal expansion and contraction of the manifolds. A liquid recirculation pipe 24 is fitted to recirculate liquid fuel from the closed end of the liquid manifold 22 at 23 back along the manifold and out at outlet 9, the counter flow cooling the liquid fuel in the case when the gas manifold is being used to convey steam to the nozzles, there to atomize the liquid fuel. Each nozzle 20 contains a swirler 27 to swirl the gas fuel or atomizing fluid, e.g. steam when used in conjunction with liquid fuel, which then emerges through the anular space 31 between the liquid fuel orifice stem 30 and nozzle stem retainer 2B. Holes in a screen 37, supported by the nozzles 10 and flame holders 10, allow entry of air to the combustion zone to support combustion and stabilize the flame. The burner element 4 may be incorporated, with other such elements in spaced relationship one to another, in a grid burner, Fig. 1 (not shown), to heat combustionsupporting gas, e.g. waste-heat gases in hot turbine exhaust for re-use, where each element is supported in a grid frame (1) by an angle member 3.
