Abstract
1329451 Carbonyl compounds UNION CARBIDE CORP 28 Aug 1970 [28 Aug 1969 29 July 1970] 41562/70 Heading C2C [Also in Divisions B1 and C1] An aldehyde or ketone is prepared by a process which comprises contacting an unsaturated hydrocarbon in the vapour phase with molecular oxygen and water vapour in the presence of catalyst which has been prepared by heating, for at least 3 hours at a temperature of from 200‹ to 500‹ C. in the presence of a gas consisting of or comprising oxygen, a mixture which contains (a) a vanadium compound, (b) palladium or a compound thereof and, optionally, (c) at least one constituent selected from ruthenium, osmium, iridium, platinum and compounds thereof and/or (d) a compound of another transition metal, for example selected from niobium, tantalum, molybdenum and tungsten. The palladium component may comprise a compound containing palladium, an additional transition metal and oxygen, for example selected from vanadates, chromates, titanates and manganates of palladium. The catalyst may contain support material, for example selected from alpha-alumina, zirconia, zinc oxide, silicon carbide and porous glass, or a minor proportion of binder material, for example silica or clay. The unsaturated hydrocarbon may be an alkene, a cycloalkene, a diene or an aralkyl compound, for example toluene. The catalyst may be used in the form of a fixed, moving or fluidized bed, the contacting being effected, optionally in the presence of saturated alkane, for example methane or ethane, and/or a minor proportion of acetylene or allene, at a temperature preferably of from 60‹ to 200‹ C. and a pressure preferably of from 1 to 50 atmospheres. Examples (including comparative examples) relate to the conversion of ethylene to acetaldehyde and by-product acetic acid (Examples I to XX and XXIII), of propylene to acetone (Example XXI) and of butene-1 or butene-2 to methylethylketone and by-product acetaldehyde and acetic acid (Example XXII) in the presence of catalysts which contain alphaalumina support material and which usually have been prepared by a procedure involving spray deposition and subsequent heating for 16 hours at 400‹ C. in air.
