Abstract
132,944. Horsley, E. C. Nov. 30, 1918. Gyroscopic apparatus.-An erector for gyroscopes comprises a non-rotating plate 6 which is fixed to the casing 3 so as to be normally in a horizontal plane and on which lie balls 9 normally resting in a groove formed by the intersection of conical surfaces 7, 8 so as to be equidistant from each other and from the axis of spin of the gyroscope. Above the plate 6 is a fixed plate 11 in which are formed slots 10 to constrain the motion of the balls. If the gyroscope axis becomes tilted, for example about the axis 4, 4, and in such a direction that the point 14 moves downwards. then the balls are displaced to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and their centre of mass is displaced to the point 15. A moment is thus obtained which restores the axis of spin to the vertical. The centre of the erector and the intersection of the gimbal axes need not lie on the axis of spin, so long as the whole system is balanced about the gimbal axes.
