Abstract

1329433 Drawing sheet glass ASAHI GLASS CO Ltd 5 Nov 1970 [6 Nov 1969 22 Sept 1970] 52619/70 Heading C1M Sheet glass is produced by drawing glass vertically upwards in the form of a ribbon 3 from a bath of molten glass 1, through a slit 13 defined by a pair of elements 2 which are partially submerged in the bath 1 and are rotatable at a speed of the order of a few revolutions per day or less. Each element has enlarged end portions and a reduced diameter intermediate portion of circular cross-section thereby forming the slit 13 between two adjacent elements. An edge block 14 for smoothing the edge of the ribbon is mounted across each pair of adjacent ends of the elements 2. The elements may be mounted such that their rotational axes are spaced from the geometric axes. Alternatively elements are provided in which the centre of the cross-section of the intermediate portion is spaced from the centre of the cross-section of the ends (Fig. 4a). Each of the elements 2 is driven by an electric motor acting through a gearing 24 and a spindle 21. The spindle 21 is made of a heat resisting alloy and has at one end 31 a ribbed cone for frictionally engaging the element 2 and a spring 26 biased against the other end. A cooling medium may be circulated through the interior of the spindle. The elements 2 are formed of a refractory material such as clay, graphite, stainless steel or a platinum covered moulding. The elements are kept warm by utilizing stainless steel screen plates 6 located on the surface of the molten glass adjacent the elements. The elements 2 may also be heated by an electric heating coil located in the bore of the drive axis 5.
