Abstract

1329398 Road surface cutting machines C W HATCHER and G WARNER 22 Feb 1972 [25 Feb 1971] 8204/72 Heading E1G In a self-propelled machine having a rotary cutter cylinder 47 for removing bumps from, or cutting multiple anti-skid grooves in, a concrete road surface, the cylinder 47, whose depth of cut is adjustable at each end, is mounted beneath a frame 23 having front wheels 40, rear wheels 81-82, and a pushing drive truck 11, the front end of the truck 11 being connected to the frame 23 by an upright sliding coupling 13-18 provided with a hydraulic lift cylinder 27 so that during transport the frame 23 can be lifted about its front wheel axis to raise the cylinder 47 and rear wheels 81-82 clear of the ground. The cylinder 47 comprises a plurality of abrasive discs, either closely packed (for bump-removing) or slightly spaced (for groving). As shown the drive truck 11 comprises a modified fork lift truck having two front drive wheels 12 but no rear wheels. The coupling 13-18 is provided by a pair of opposed upright channels fixed to the truck 11 and engaged by vertically-spaced roller pairs 21, 22 on a carriage 18 fixed to the frame 23. In order to adjust the depth of cut at each end of the cylinder 47 the respective wheel pairs 81-82 are carried on cranked arms 70, Figure 7, pivoted to the, frame at 72 and having a lostmotion connection with a respective heightadjustment screw 76 in the carriage 18. The additional height-adjustable road wheel 98 shown in Figure 7 is optional for use particularly with a groove-cutting cylinder. Cooling water is sprayed from a pipe 104. The cylinder 47 is mounted on a shaft each end of which is belt-driven from an engine 55 through a hydraulically-actuated clutch 56 and a differential. The truck 11 comprises an engine 24, fluid coupling 24', multi-speed transmission 25, and differential 26, and carries a pump 90 for the hydraulic circuit. The front wheels 38, 40 on the frame 23 are powersteered from the wheel 32 on the truck, there being an offset steering guide 108.
