1329089 Transfers ADHESIVE MATERIALS Ltd 18 Sept 1970 [24 Sept 1969] 47117/69 Heading B6C Printing characters mounted on one support surface for transfer to another support surface are each formed with a surrounding boundary area transferred with it and serving to position it with respect to other transferred characters so that spacing corresponding to that obtained with normal type characters may be achieved. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, a laminated sheet comprising a body material 1 such as transparent cellulose acetate, and a layer 2 of peelable adhesive, protected by a siliconized release paper is printed with characters 4 from a normal fount of type or from a block or screen made from the fount, which fount may include spacing elements. Cuts 5 are then made through the layers 1, 2 by means of a steel-rule cutter so that each character is enclosed in a rectangular area defined by the cuts 5 and corresponding to the type size. Each character can be detached and applied to another support surface, the cut edges 5 of adjacent characters abutting to give the correct spacing. As shown in Fig. 4, a laminate is used comprising an opaque layer 7 of black P.V.C. or paper, a layer 11 of peelable adhesive, and a release paper 13. The layers 7, 11 are cut not only along the lines defining te rectangular boundary of each character but also along the lines of the characters themselves. Each character is detached along the boundary lines for placement on another supporting surface. Subsequently the area surrounding the character or the character itself can be removed according to whether a positive image or a reverse image is required. In this embodiment, each character and its surrounding area may be printed in different colours. Further, a heat melt adhesive may be used, and there may be small joins between the edges of the characters and their surrounds so that after transfer the characters may be fixed by a heated stylus. Also, a gummed sheet may be used, and a wet brush used to attach the characters. An encapsulated adhesive may be employed. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 8, the characters comprising a layer of ink 15 or stove paint are sandwiched between a translucent silicone-treated mounting sheet 17 and a layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive 20. A further layer 19 of coloured lacquer or varnish defines a rectangular area enclosing each character. By application of pressure to the sheet 17 the layers 15, 19, 20 can be transferred to a surface. The colour of the lacquer is such that when the finished assembly of characters is photographed for reproduction, thd colour of the lacquer is not visible. However, for reverse printing, the characters are printed in white and rectangular surround of varnish coloured with a colour which appears on the photographed image. The laminates containing the characters may be made in reel form and the cutting may be effected by high-frequency current methods.
