Abstract
1328797 Welding by pressure W F CHAMBERS and J E M JUBB 2 Nov 1970 [31 July 1969] 38410/69 Heading B3R In a method of manufacturing a braced structural member having two spaced metal skins 1, 2 and a zig-zag bracing member 3 welded to the skins at the nodal points 5, the bracing member 3 is supported on a boom 6 which is then inserted between the spaced skins 1, 2, hydraulic cylinder means 7 are extended to press the bracing member against the skins and electric resistance welding effected at the nodal points 5, either sequentially or simultaneously in suitable groups. The boom is preferably rotatable so that it may be inserted between the skins with the bracing member disposed horizontally and then rotated to bring it to its desired inclined position in which the nodal points 5 abut the corresponding points of adjacent bracing members. The resistance welding electrodes 14 may be mounted on the piston-rods 11 with electrical leads 16 extending therefrom along the boom, the electrodes being insulated at 15 from the rods 11. Alternatively separate electrodes may be used.
