Abstract
1328628 Automatic control of current and temperature WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 31 Aug 1971 [28 Sept 1970] 40477/71 Heading G3R [Also in Divisions F1, F4] A refrigeration system includes parallel compressors driven by electric motors. The currents drawn by each motor are compared and the capacity of a compressor is automatically reduced if the current in its associated motor exceeds the currents in other motors, so that the loads on the compressors are balanced. In the system shown, a refrigeration circuit includes two parallel compressors 1, 3 driven by motors 2, 4 respectively, a condensor 7, an expansion valve 8 and an evaporator chiller 9. Sensors 19, 23 detect the temperature of zooled water 10, and elements 20, 24 operate appropriate contacts 21, 22, 25, 26 if the temperature is above or below a desired value, to energise solenoids 27-30. These solenoids operate valves which control pressure fluid-flow to piston and cylinder arrangements for opening or closing vanes on the compressors 1, 3 and thus adjusting the flow in the refrigerant circuit, Figs.2-5 (not shown), to regulate the water temperature. Each compressor motor 2, 4 has a currentsensing coil 70, 71 connected to an associated relay 72, 73 which, when the motor current exceeds a preset value, closes contacts 72', 73' to energise one of the solenoids 27, 28 and decrease the load on the motor concerned. The coils 70, 71 are connected together in a bridge arrangement 75, 76, 77 so that the sensed currents flow in opposition and an excessive current difference operates the relay 72, 73 associated with the motor drawing the higher current. The load on that motor is reduced as described above and the compressor loads are balanced. Similar comparator connections for three parallel compressor motors are described, Fig. 6 (not shown). If a motor is switched off, an associated contact 80, 81 closes to short out the currentsensing coil 70, 71, allowing the remaining motors to function in the same way as before.
