Abstract

1328535 Mounting and dismounting tyres W L SCHULTZ and M SCHULTZ 4 Sept 1970 42522/70 Heading B7C A tyre removal device, in conjunction with bead breaking means 56, 57, comprises, in combination, means 30 to receive the associated wheel, means to centre the wheel with respect to a mandrel 8b in the form of arcuately curved brake shoes 35, drive means in the form of a gear train 89 and hydraulic motor to rotate the mandrel 86 within casing 94, and hence the associated wheel 101, a stationary fulcrum component (88<SP>1</SP>) which has a pair of side members (100) through which tyre removal and replacement devices may be engaged. The casing 94, gear train 89, hydraulic motor and mandrel 86 may be pivoted about pin 95 from a vertical position, Fig. 16, to a horizontal position, Fig. 17, in which latter position the apparatus may be locked by means of a dog 96. In a further embodiment described with reference to Fig. 1, a wheel holding device 30 is mounted upon a mandrel 16. The device 30 comprises a sleeve 31 having a plurality of pairs of lugs or brackets 32 extending diametrically outwardly from the sleeve. A ratchet arm 33 is pivotally connected by a pin 34 to the ends of each of the pairs of lugs 32 and an acurately curved brake shoe assembly 35 is connected by a pin 36 to the distal end of each of the arms 33. A movable sleeve 37 surrounds the mandrel 16 to the right of sleeve 31 as shown in Fig. 1. The sleeve 37 is moved within the limits of slot 39 in the direction of arrow 42 by means of an hydraulic piston 28 and cylinder 40. The mandrel 16 is partially extended by means of the hydraulic piston and cylinder assembly 22 actuated by motor 29 so that the wheel and tyre assembly 81 is locked upon the brake shoe assemblies 35 with the aid of the piston and cylinder assembly 28. A spider (48) prevents movement of the pin relative to the mandrel 16. The bead breaking component 50 is swung into position to flat end 64<SP>1</SP> of bead breaker 64 engaged between the rim and tyre. The mandrel 16 is now extended further to break the bead at a point and then the mandrel is retracted slightly and the entire assembly manually rotated, then the mandrel is extended again. After the outer bead has been broken, the component 56 is moved to its outer position, Fig. 3, (not shown) and the component 57 is locked in position by means of gauge 72 and locking lever 70. The mandrel is now retracted by means of cylinder 22 to force the junction of the tyre and rim against the bead breaking portion 74 of component 57. After the bead has been broken, the tyre removal device 75 is swung into position so that component 80 engages the tyre wall adjacent the rim. The mandrel 16 is now retracted so that the bead breaking component 74, together with the tyre removal component (83) maintain the tyre in the original position so that the mandrel 16 draws the rim clear of the tyre.
