Abstract

1328498 Riveting AVDEL Ltd 25 Sept 1970 [26 Sept 1969] 47526/69 Heading B3U A collar carrying device for use with lockbolt swaging apparatus comprises a body portion 33 for attaching the device to lockbolt swaging apparatus, and a plurality of movable arms 34 for releasbly holding a lockbolt collar 12 in front of an annular anvil 18 of the swaging apparatus to allow the stem of a lockbolt pin to be inserted through the collar and anvil, the arms being arranged about an axis and extending forwardly of the body portion 33 and providing inclined surfaces 43 adapted to translate relative axial movement between the device and a part of the swaging apparatus into movement of the arms in a direction transverse to said axis. A collar 12 is inserted in the device so that the end 12b of the collar contacts the outer end of the anvil throat. The swaging apparatus together with the collar is then pushed over the stem 11 until the end face of the collar abuts the workpiece. A drawbolt 24 is retracted causing jaws 22 to grip grooves 17 and pull the anvil 18 over the collar 12, thus swaging the collar into locking grooves 15. The collar carrying device travels forwards with the anvil causing the arms 34 to slide over the cylindrical part 12c of the collar until parts 44 of the arms meet the adjacent face of the workpiece. As the anvil continues to move the front end of the anvil engages inclined surfaces 43 and forces the arms outwardly to release the collar. The outward movement continues until the front face 20 of the anvil reaches the workpiece, Fig. 10. The stem of the lockbolt then breaks at groove 16 and when drawbolt 24 is returned the nose 24a of the drawbolt contacts the rear end of the swaged collar to push the anvil off the collar. The collar carrying device is moved forwardly since dimples 36 in the body portion meet the advancing annular face 37 of the drawbolt thus allowing the arms 34 to close inwardly.
