Abstract

1328484 Seaming non-metallic sheet material WINDMOLLER & HOLSCHER 19 Jan 1971 [2 Feb 1970] 2587/71 Heading B5K A heat sealing jaw 2 comprises an elastic layer 24 to compensate for differences in the thickness of the material being heat sealed, the layer 24 being disposed between a heated flexible sealing bar 25 and support means for the bar. The support means for the bar 25 comprises a bar 19, an asbestos layer 18 and a base bar 5, all bolted together. The jaw 2 is adjustable along a table 1 in the direction of an arrow 16 by bolts 14, 15 and nuts 12, 13 sliding in channels 10, 11. The bar 5 is provided with holes 17 to minimize the heat transmission between the bar 5 and the table 1. Preferably, the layer 24 is made of silicon rubber. A heating element 27 of rod form is provided in a portion 25<SP>1</SP> of the bar 25 and may be cast or moulded into this bar, Fig. 2 (not shown), or may be inserted into a groove 28 therein and retained by a plate 29, Fig. 3. A tapered portion 25<SP>11</SP> connects the portion 25<SP>1</SP> to a portion 25<SP>111</SP> defining the sealing surface 26. Asbestos layers 31, 32 fixed to metal sheathing 35, 36 and to the bar 19 by bolts 33, 34 hold the bar 25 against the layer 24. Resilient tabs 37, 37<SP>1</SP>, 38, 38<SP>1</SP> on the sheathing 35, 36 hold the bar 25 against longitudinal displacement but yield to expansion of the bar produced by heating. A silk cover 39 coated or impregnated with polytetrafluoroethylene prevents the material being scaled from sticking to the surface 26 and is wound on to shafts 43, 44, its ends being clamped between bars 45, 46, 47, 48. An upper jaw 4, co-operable with the jaw 2, is also provided with a non-stick cover and contains a heating rod 53. The jaw 4 is movable in the direction of the arrow 3 by a plurality of hydraulic or pneumatic pistons located in cylinders 57 and having rods 56 which, by means of pivot pins 86, are hinged to supporting plates 88 for the jaw 4. The plates 88 are associated with pressers 85 and are held thereto by springs 93. The pressers 85 associated with the outer plates 88 are provided with guide grooves 87 to allow the pressers 85 to move lengthwise of the jaw 4. The plates 88 are provided with transverse ribs 96 to ensure uniform loading of the jaw 4. The cylinders 57 are mounted on a U-section bridge 59 which can be pivoted about a pin 70. A bolt 74 having a washer 79 and a nut 80 is provided to fix the bridge 59 in a predetermined position. The jaws 2, 4 may be used in a machine for sealing filled bags made of a laminate, the bag having inner facing thermoplastic plies and outer plies of aluminium foil, paper or a plastics material having a higher melting point than the inner plies.
