1326944 Metal salts of alkyl (sulphoalkoxy)- benzoates FMC CORP 11 Aug 1970 [3 Sept 1969 4 June 1970] 38601/70 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] Compounds of the formula wherein R 1 and R 2 are both H atoms or C 1 to C 4 alkyl radicals, n is an integer from 1 to 6 and M is a metal atom; are obtained when n is 2 or 3, by reacting a metal alkoxide with a C 1 to C 4 alkyl o-, m- or p-hydroxybenzoate in a C 1 to C 3 alkanol to form a metallic salt of the alkyl hydroxybenzoate, reacting this salt with a C 2 or C 3 alkane sultone in a mole ratio of 1 : 1 in an excess of DMF under reflux to give a compound of the above formula, or when n is 1 to 6, by reacting a metal salt of a C 1 to C 4 alkyl o-, m- or p-hydroxybenzoate obtained as above with a C 1 to C 6 alkylene dihalide at a mole ratio of from about 1 : 2 to 1 : 5 in a large excess of solvent under raflux, and sulphonating the resulting alkyl-(haloalkoxy) benzoate by reacting it with an equal mole ratio of a metal bisulphite in water or a 1: 1 water-lower alkanol solution under reflux to give a compound of the above formula. Examples are given for the preparation of the sodium salts of methyl 2- and 4-(3-sulphopropoxy)-benzoates and methyl 2-(4-sulphobutoxy) benzoate. They are useful in the preparation of modified polyesters.
