1326718 Determining flammability and smoke density MICHIGAN CHEMICAL CORP 20 Sept 1971 [21 Sept 1970] 43738/71 Headings G1A and G1X In an apparatus for determining the flammability and smoke density of an organic polymer material, the material is first caused to burn in a controlled oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere in one chamber to determine its flammability and the resulting smoke is measured by optical means in a further chamber. Oxygen and nitrogen are passed, as shown, via shut off valves 14 and 16, fire metering valves 18 and 20 and flowmeters 22 and 24 to a bed of glass beads 30 in a chamber 37, from where they pass via a tube 31 to help maintain the burning of a sample polymer 34. The flammability may be determined by measuring the oxygen index which is defined as the minimum volume fraction of oxygen in an atmosphere of oxygen and nitrogen which is needed to sustain the candlelike burning of a polymeric specimen. The temperature of the sample 34 and the surrounding area may be varied by means of a heating coil 36. The density of the smoke formed by the burning is measured by a light source 40 and a photo-cell 42. A further lens 44 is provided to enable the smoke to be photographed to determine the size and nature of the particles making up the smoke. The exit 46 can provide a holder for a filter paper so that the resulting spot can be classified by its degree of darkness. The light source and the photo-cell may slidably mounted at the wall defining said second chamber.
