Abstract
132,670. Burbury, H. W. Nov. 20, 1918. Reels and winches, rod.--The check action of a fishing-reel is made as an independent unit capable of adjustment to vary the check, and of being entirely withdrawn when desired. Preferably, also, it is constructed to offer less resistance during winding than during the check. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the spring detent C, which engages with the check wheel D, is pivoted on a member B slidably mounted in a recess A<2> in the reel frame A, in which it is held bv the overlying screws B<0>. By means of the milled nut A<4> on the screwed end B<4> of the member B, the detent can be adjusted or put out of action, as desired. The leaf spring E, which controls the detent C, is secured in a transverse slot in the member B by a screw E<3>, which bears in a notch in the edge of the spring; a similar notch may be formed in the opposite edge, to enable the spring to be reversed, for left-hand manipulation. The ends of the spring bear on the detent at different distances from its pivot, so as to offer less resistance during winding than when running on the check. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the supporting-bracket A<3> is secured to the reel frame by screws. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the bracket is integral with the reel frame, the milled nut B' being confined by a bridge-piece F; and the variation of the action of the controlling-spring on the detent is obtained by causing the spring to bear on arms H<2>, H<3> of different lengths formed on the detent. Accidental displacement of the milled nut B<5> may be prevented by a spring-controlled plunger, or a spring click F<2>, Fig. 3, arranged to engage the milled edge of the nut.
