Abstract

1326331 Laminates SOLVAY & CIE 7 Jan 1972 [7 Jan 1971] 823/72 Heading B5N [Also in Division B2] A process for bonding a component comprising polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer containing more than 50% by weight of vinyl chloride to a polyester comprises forming the bond by means of an adhesive comprising a film of polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer as defined above plasticized by means of a mixture of an unsaturated polyester and an unsaturated monomeric compound having the ability to function as a crosslinking agent therefore. The film may be bonded to the vinyl chloride polymer component in the form of a film or sheet by the application of heat and pressure. The polyester resin to be joined to the component may comprise either an unsaturated liquid polyester component which is preferably applied by spraying to the hot adhesive film or a mat of glass fibres impregnated with liquid resin which may be bonded to the adhesive film by the application of heat and pressure. The vinyl chloride may be copolymerized with vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, acrylonitrile or acrylic, methacrylic, maleic or fumaric acid or an anhydride or alkyl ester thereof. The polyester resin used in the adhesive film may be derived from a saturated or unsaturated diol or triol e.g. diethylene glycol, propylene glycol, butylene glycol, glycerol, 2- butene-1,4-diol or ricinoleic alcohol, a dicarboxylic acid e.g. maleic, fumaric, itaconic or citraconic acid and optionally a saturated dicarboxylic acid e.g. adipic, succinic, glutaric, pimelic, azelaic or sebacic acid. The preferred unsaturated monomeric compound is diallyl phthalate. The adhesive film may also contain stabilizers, lubricants, plasticizers, fillers and a cross-linking indicator which is inactive at temperatures below 120‹C. e.g. an organic peroxide. In a preferred embodiment, a glass fibre mat may be incorporated on the adhesive film.
