Abstract
1326022 Multistages presses; shearing AVDEL Ltd 17 Aug 1970 [15 Aug 1969] 40844/69 Headings B3H and B3W A multistage press has two banks of dies DA1, DA2, DA3, DA4 and DB1, DB2, DB3, DB4 respectively, Fig. 4, along which workpieces are moved successively to a control discharge station or stations by grippers FA1, FA2, FB1, FB2 &c., mounted on a common slide 16 which is reciprocated to move a finished workpiece to the discharge station from each bank alternately; the dies have co-operating punch tools TA1, TB1, &c., Fig. 1 and the tools of each bank are reciprocated 180 degrees out of phase. The slide is composed of a pair of members 16A, 16B which are adjustably connected together by a connector 17. The grippers FA1, FB1, &c. are conventionally operated by a set of cams FCA1, FCB1, &c. which operate on rollers 25. The grippers are spring-biased closed and have adjustable stops. The slide and the set of cams are each reciprocated by a cam. The tools TA1, TB1, &c. are lowered and raised by cams LCA1, LCB1, RCA1, RCB1, &c. Fig. 1 all mounted on a common shaft 33. The workpieces are cropped from a wire feed along a tube 41, Fig. 9, to a cropping station such as CA by grooved rollers 42, 43. The rollers are intermittently rotated by a pawl and ratchet driven by a connecting rod 48 whose stroke is adjustable. The wire is then guided through a fixed die 57 and a cropping die 58 mounted on a slide 59 reciprocated by cams. The length of feed is determined by an adjustable stop 61. An ejector 64 moves the cropped wire from the die 58 into the grippers FA1, FB1. Each die of the multistage press also has an ejector EA1, EB1, &c. operated by cams ECA1, ECB1, &c. on a common shaft 65. Each ejector pin 66, Fig. 11, has a flat upper surface 67 to support the workpiece 68 vertically so that it can be engaged by the grippers. The press is driven by an electric motor 71, Fig. 1, which drives the cam-shafts of the press through gearing in timed relationship. The press may have one or two discharge stations dispersed between the two banks and in the former case a movable deflector plate may be used to deflect the discharged workpieces from one bank in one direction and those from the other bank in the opposite direction. Each bank may have two to six or more dies.
