Abstract
1325459 Gunn effect frequency changer; radio signalling LICENTIA PATENT-VERWALTUNGS-GmbH 12 Aug 1970 [12 Aug 1969] 38883/70 Headings H3T and H4L A circuit for the up-conversion of an intermediate frequency, frequency or phase modulated signal has a single Gunn effect semiconductor element 1 to provide the functions of an input amplifier, mixer oscillator, mixer and microwave output amplifier. The Gunn element 1 is synchronized with the injected I.F. signal ZF which forms a subharmonic of the oscillations. The non-linear characteristics of the Gunn effect element bring about the up-conversion of the amplified intermediate frequency signal. The incoming frequency modulated or phase modulated I.F. ZF is supplied to the Gunn element 1 via a L.P.F. (TP, Fig. 2, not shown), and the output to be transmitted is taken from a H.P.F. (HP). The Gunn element 1 is mounted in a waveguide 6 and is supplied with bias via the inner conductor 3 of a coaxial input line 2. A portion of the inner conductor 3 is enlarged to provide a matching element and screws 7 also provide adjustment of matching. A cavity filter 4 blocks the microwaves and a shorting plunger 5 tunes the output HF. The circuit may be used in a radio link relay station.
