Abstract

1325413 Centrifugal separator WESTFALIA SEPARATOR AG 21 March 1972 [30 April 1971] 13188/72 Heading B2P A centrifugal separator drum for concentrating solids suspended in a liquid comprises a concentration chamber 10 the radially outer part of which communicates with nozzles 5 for the continuous discharge of concentrate to the outside, and valve means 4 which, in its open position, uncovers a plurality of orifices 9, Fig. 1, or an annular slot 16, Fig. 3, at the drum periphery for the complete ejection of concentrate and liquid from the chamber. In Fig. 1, a piston valve 4 embraces the outside of the bottom drum section 1 and is equipped with a number of nozzles 5 distributed around its periphery. When control liquid fills a closing chamber 6 the valve 4 is in its closed position as shown. Its top edge is forced into contact with a sealing ring 7 and the inlet openings 8 of the nozzles 5 communicate through some of the orifices 9 with the chamber 10, there being a greater number of orifices 9 than there are nozzles 5 and those orifices 9 not communicating with the openings 8 being kept closed by the valve 4. To empty the drum completely, the supply of control liquid is opened and the latter flows from the channel 11 through passages 12, 13 to an opening chamber 14 thereby causing the valve 4 to open so that the nozzle openings 8 lie beneath the orifices 9 which thus communicate freely with the outside. Rinsing water is supplied to the chamber to rinse out the solids. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the piston valve carrying the nozzles is arranged into the drum interior. When the valve is in the open position an annular slot is opened up between the valve and the drum cover (2) and the concentrate passing through this slot then passes outside through ejector slots (17) in the drum bottom section (1). In Fig. 3, the small tubes 18 lead from the radially outer part of the chamber 10 to the discharge nozzles 5 through which the concentrate is continuously centrifuged out when the valve 4 is in its closed position. When the feed is closed, the drum empties to the level A which corresponds to the level of the discharge bores of the nozzles 5. After opening of the valve 4 the drum contents are ejected through the annular slot 16 and the ejector slots 17. In any of the above arrangements, the control mechanism for the piston valve may be coupled to a switch which in the event of any imbalance in the drum automatically initiates the displacement of the piston valve into the position in which it exposes the orifices 9 or the slot 16.
