Abstract

1324725 Artificial leather GENERAL TIRE & RUBBER CO 28 May 1971 [1 June 1970] 18160/71 Heading DIP [Also in Division C3] A non-woven fibrous mat is saturated with a cured frothed mixture of a blend comprising 100 parts by weight of a plastisol grade vinyl chloride resin, which may contain up to 50 parts by weight extender resins, between 50 to 100 parts by weight of at least one compatible liquid plasticizer, a stabilizer for the vinyl chloride resin and 10 to 16 parts by weight of an emulsifier comprising between 36-46 weight percent of a saturated or unsaturated fatty acid having from 12-24 carbon atoms or mixtures thereof; between 27-37 weight percent of an alkali salt of a saturated or unsaturated fatty acid having from 12-24 carbon atoms or mixtures thereof; between 6-16 wt. percent of potassium acid phthalate, disodium phthalate, or sodium acid phthalate; between 4-8 weight percent water; between 4-6 weight percent of a saturated aliphatic glycol; between 2-4 weight percent of a low melocular weight hydrocarbon-type oil; and between 1.5-2.5 weight percent of silicic acid; and, (II) between 7 to 19 parts by weight of a liquid polyurethane precursor prepared from the reaction between a polyol and a polyisocyanate. The stabilizer may be an organic or inorganic lead salt, a barium-cadmium-zinc compound, an organotin compound, epoxydized soybean oil, or a chelating agent. The plasticizer may be a di(aliphatic)phthalate, sebacate or adipate, epoxylized soybean oil, aromtaic petroleum hydrocarbons, or a themoplastic phenolformaldehyde resin. The polyvinyl chloride resin may be diluted with an extender resin, e.g. polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinylidene chloride, a copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride, or a polyvinyl chloride-polybutadiene blend. Flame retardants such as antimony trioxide, tris (2, 3 dibromopropyl) phosphate, tetrabromophthalic anhydride, tetrabromobisphenol and perchloropentacyclodecane (65% chlorine) may also be added in amounts ranging from 1-20 parts per 100 parts by weight of resin. In examples (1-8) the mat consisted of a nylon fibrous mat which may be needled, and in example 9 the needled mats consisted of rayon, a nylon/rayon mixture and acrylic material.
