Abstract

1324221 Gas bearing FEDERAL-MOGUL WESTWIND AIR BEARINGS Ltd 20 Jan 1972 [2 Feb 1971] 3711/71 Heading F2A A bearing assembly of a rotary shaft 2 which has a spindle 1 extending from one end thereof comprises a sleeve 3 having holes 15 therein for supplying gas to the space between the sleeve and the shaft and a bearing-plate 4 disposed so as to engage the end of the shaft remote from the spindle, the plate having holes 11 for supplying gas to the space between the plate and the shaft, the holes in the plate being spaced from the rotational axis of the shaft. Preferably the holes in the plate are located in a circle centred on the axis of rotation of the shaft. The sleeve and plate may be disposed in a housing in which ducts 9, 10, 13, 14 are located so as to connect the holes with a source of pressurized gas. A plate 16 may be provided at the end of the bearing assembly remote from the plate to retain the shaft in the assembly.
