Abstract

1323963 Moulding polycaprolactam UNITIKALtd 19 April 1971 [16 April 1970] 26144/71 Heading B5A In a process for producing shaped articles of polycaprolactam, caprolactam is polymerized at a temperature below the melting point of polycaprolactam is the presence of an alkaline catalyst and an activator; the resulting polymer is melt-shaped in the presence of water (0.1-10 moles/mole of catalyst used) e.g. by extrusions or injection methods. The water may be incorporated into the polymer in any suitable fashion (other than washing) e.g. by soaking, steam damping or, in the case of particles, merely by mixing. The catalyst may be an alkali or alkaline earth metal, a caprolactam salt thereof or a hydroxide, hydride, carbonate or alkoxide of an alkali or alkaline earth metal. Activators include, esters, isocyanates or urea or methane compounds. Preferred are sodium caprolactam and N-acetyl caprolactam.
