1323683 Working store J S CRUICKSHANK 17 July 1970 [20 June 1969] 31386/69 Heading B5E [Also in Division B3] A method of making a three-dimensional reproduction of an object from a series of photographic records of the object taken at regular angular and/or longitudinal intervals comprises scanning of the outlines of the object from the series of records and transmitting the scanning movement on to a movement of rotary cutting tool which cuts corresponding outlines into a block of material displaced in a way corresponding to that in which the object was displaced for taking the series of photographic records. As described, the object photographed may be an article, person or a part thereof and the apparatus for carrying out the method has a projector 21 having a screen 22 on to which a profile of one of the series of photographs is projected. A tracer 12A is movable over the profile and is carried by a swivel plate 12 which is mounted on a block and connected by parallel rods 10 to a second swivel plate 9 mounted on a second block 14 and carrying a rotating tool 15 for operating on a block 18 of plaster or other material, such as metal, the blocks 14 being interconnected by a base plate 11. The block 18 is mounted in a carrier mechanism for clamping and turning the block on a worktable 19. The blocks 14 are slidable along horizontal guide rods 13 carried by blocks 3 vertically slidable on columns 2, weights 24 counterbalancing the weight of the blocks, &c. In an alternative arrangement, the plates 9, 12 are vertically slidable on the blocks 14. The block 18 of material may be displaced automatically as the profiles projected on the screen are changed.
